Central garage is a local garage based in Porlock in the middle of Exmoor. We provide servicing, repair and MOTs to the local area and visitors.
We are locally owned and run by local people with many decades of experience. Our aim is to keep all our customers’ vehicles in top condition without having to spend the money that main dealers demand and without having to travel an hour or more to the main dealers in Exeter, Taunton, Bridgwater, and Barnstaple.
Our workshop is equipped with diagnostic equipment, a connected MOT lane, and air conditioning filling and servicing equipment. We also supply and fit tyres and do tracking.

A proper local garage
Almost a hundred years ago, Central Garage was one of several garages in Porlock village that catered for and competed for the business generated by Porlock Hill. All traffic to and from Cornwall had at that time to use the A39 and so had to negotiate the hill. In the early days of motoring, cars were less powerful with rather delicate clutches and brakes that were just a fraction as effective as today’s brakes.
Porlock hill took its toll on cars which would burn out clutches or blow up engines going up the hill and brakes coming down. Tow trucks were stationed at strategic points on the hill to be ready to “rescue” injured vehicles. Central Garage is the only one remaining. Whilst we do our fair share of clutches and brakes, we now offer a full array of services and MOT for all makes of car
